What is a Dietitian

Dietitians are university educated and practically trained health professionals who translate the science of nutrition into healthy eating principles.

All Registered Dietitians (RD) have a university degree (dietetics), have completed an accredited internship and have written the Canadian Dietetic Registration Exam.

apple-ruler.jpgThe name “Registered Dietitian” is protected by law and only those who have taken the steps above can use the designation. The name “nutritionist” is not protected, thus, any person can call themselves a nutritionist. Dietitians may refer to themselves as Registered Dietitians or Nutritionists.

Dietitians in private practice (like Equilibrium Nutrition) work on a fee for service basis. Services may be covered in full or in part by various extended health benefits plans. All clients are encouraged to explore their eligibility for third party coverage. If you do not have third party coverage, keep your receipts and put them towards your yearly medical expenses. The medical expense tax credit is a calculated amount that reduces taxes.

The following insurance companies/programs may provide third-party reimbursement for up to $500.00/year for dietitian’s services:

  • Blue Cross
  • Chambers of Commerce Group Insurance
  • Clarica
  • Great West Life
  • ManuLife Financial
  • Sun Life
  • Warren Shepell Employee Assistance Program
